Indigestion – that unpleasant feeling of pain or discomfort in your upper stomach after eating – is common, but it can really interfere with your life. Gut symptoms after eating are often caused by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or acid reflux but these symptoms can also be a sign of coeliac disease or H. pylori stomach infection.
Coeliac disease affects 1 in 100 people in the UK and causes gut symptoms after eating gluten-containing foods such as pasta, bread or cakes.
Helicobacter pylori is a stomach infection which affects up to 1-in-5 people in the UK. It causes stomach inflammation and is one of the leading causes of stomach ulcers. In rare cases it can also cause stomach cancer.
This simple blood and stool panel can test for both coeliac disease and H. pylori in one go and is ideal if you're trying to get to the bottom of gut symptoms related to eating such as:
Coeliac disease affects 1% of the UK population and most people don't know they have it. It causes stomach pain and bloating after eating, particularly with gluten-containing foods like pasta, bread or cakes.
WHAT'S MEASURED?
H. pylori infection affects up to 1-in-5 people in the UK. It causes stomach inflammation and ulcers which causes indigestion symptoms.
WHAT'S MEASURED?
Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication, such as lansoprazole or omeprazole can make the H. pylori stool test less accurate. If you take PPIs you should stop this at least 2 weeks before testing. It is usually safe to stop this medication for a short period of time, but if you're not sure, speak to your prescriber.
The test for coeliac disease will not be accurate if you do not have gluten in your diet. Make sure your diet contains wheat, barley or rye in the 6 weeks before testing for accurate results.
This test panel can tell you if you have coeliac disease or H. pylori stomach infection, both of which can cause indigestion symptoms. Positive results can indicate a disease that may require treatment. Negative results make it much less likely that you have a specific disease causing your symptoms and that you may benefit more from changes to your lifestyle.
We do not recommend using this test panel if you:
If you already have a known medical condition that gives you indigestion then this test panel may not be useful.
