Heart disease takes years to develop but starts in your 20s. A metabolic health test (or heart health test) can help you prevent heart disease and other conditions by checking your cholesterol, HbA1c (diabetes risk) and inflammation. Optimise these heart health markers to lower your risk.

What is metabolic health?

Metabolic health looks at how well your body is coping with everyday challenges such as what you eat, how you move, stress and sleep.

Metabolic health has sometimes been called "heart health" but actually we know that your levels of cholesterol, HbA1c and inflammation influence more than just your heart. Poor metabolic health accelerates ageing and increases the risk of common killers such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and dementia.

When should you get a metabolism test?

It's never too early to get a metabolic health test. Conditions like heart disease, diabetes and cancer don't happen overnight. They take years to develop and problems with your metabolic health can be the first sign of trouble, happening decades earlier.

What are the 5 signs of metabolic health?

Metabolic health can be defined by having optimal levels of the following 5 markers:

Blood sugar (HbA1c)
High density lipoportein (HDL) cholesterol
Triglycerides
Blood pressure
Waist circumference

If you have abnormal levels of three or more of these markers, you are said to have metabolic syndrome.

What is tested in a metabolic blood test?

The metabolic health blood test gives you a snapshot of how well your body is adapting to the food you eat and the energy you use. It checks the levels of your cholesterol, HbA1c (diabetes risk) and inflammation.

Cholesterol Status
Your lipid profile - the levels of triglycerides and cholesterols in your blood - is one of most important risk factors for heart disease. High cholesterol also increases your risk of stroke and dementia.
WHAT'S MEASURED?
- Triglycerides are a type of fat that your body uses for energy.
- Cholesterol is a type of fat that is present in the blood. Total cholesterol is the sum of all the different types of cholesterol in the body - some good and some bad.
- HDL cholesterol is the amount of cholesterol carried on High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) particles. The latest evidence suggests that the HDL cholesterol level is not directly related to the risk of heart disease. However, it's still a useful marker of metabolic health as low levels can indicate insulin resistance.
- LDL cholesterol is the cholesterol carried on Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) particles particles. It's the major type of 'non-HDL' cholesterol. Higher LDL cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
- Your non-HDL cholesterol is your total cholesterol minus your HDL cholesterol. Most non-HDL cholesterol is LDL-cholesterol. Higher non-HDL cholesterol levels are strongly associated with increased risk of heart disease. The lower we can get your non-HDL cholesterol level the better.
- This is the amount of total cholesterol compared to HDL cholesterol. Studies have shown that a lower ratio is associated with better health and reduced risk of heart disease. It is used by some guidelines to determine if someone could benefit from taking lipid-lowering medication.
Diabetes Risk
Diabetes and pre-diabetes - the stage before full-blown diabetes - are directly linked to your risk of heart disease. Poor sugar handling is also related to other conditions such as cancer and dementia.
WHAT'S MEASURED?
- HbA1c measures the amount of sugar stuck to your red blood cells. It's a marker of your sugar handling over the last 3 months. Lower levels are generally associated with better health while high levels indicate pre-diabetes or diabetes.
Heart Risk
Cholesterol and diabetes are important causes of heart disease but we can actually test for heart risk directly with high sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP).
WHAT'S MEASURED?
- C-reactive protein is biomarker of inflammation and very slightly elevated levels (which can be detected with this 'High sensitivity' test) are associated with heart disease.
